Avalanche Problem #1
Problem
New Snow
Problem #1 Comments
The storms overproduced pretty heavily in this area. Average new snow depth of 18" (45cm) in the 7500-9000' elevations well away from the steep rock walls. Much deeper where it's piling up under those steadily shedding rock faces on the south wall of the couloir.
New snow is very right side up and bonding to the old snow was solid. About about 8300' we found a mildly reactive soft slab scattered around. The weak layer was generally 6-8" deep within the new snow, Q2/RP, though we only noticed it with hand pits. Sluffing in the new snow was slow and didn't run far. Snow quality was excellent.
Comments
Mostly cloudy, generally around 30F when not snowing, though cold cold clouds flowed through often and would dump mostly graupel with some flakes between moments of sunshine. All time skiing conditions for this line, almost good enough to offset the entry fee. Snow was dry but surely will cook the next time the afternoon sun has opportunity.
