Comments
Out today to dust off the cobwebs and check out current conditions. Some noteable observations. Recent high winds have done some work; we noticed significant previous transport. Test slopes low and throughout the middle drainage revealing no results for us. We watched numerous parties ski through areas where we would expect to see recent wind-slab formation without incident. Highly variable HS, average ranging from 40-80cm. Generally shallow reef conditions however pockets of good coverage still abound.
We dug 2 pits in a similar location, though different aspects, NE and SE. Both with similarly corroborating results. HS in those pits was 55 and 79 respectively. In both pits we noticed a generally damp lower snowpack and a density change around 25-35cm down. In the southerly pit a thin, 1F crust was observed. This layer produced hard CT results and did not propogate with ECT.
Skiing down, snow felt sand-papery although generally good turns in well-covered areas. Not the over the head face shots we've been seeing on social media; I think we all need to realize that the recent winds have changed the ski quality and coverage. On that note, there were a lot of parties and soloists out and we observed a general disregard for safe travel protocols; we observed a party hanging out in the choke-point of toledo bowl for at least 20 minutes, skis off. As well as numerous groups skiing above others and party wave-ing runs.
