Special Announcements

The Utah Avalanche Center Moab has finished issuing advisories for the season. As of this writing, most of the slopes facing southeast through southwest are bare or nearly so. Slopes facing the north side of the compass at upper elevations are still holding a fair amount of snow but are largely in a transitional state, meaning they are in between dry winter snow, and spring corn snow, offering a mixed bag of challenging conditions.

Jut because we are through issuing advisories doesn't mean the avalanche danger has completely subsided. Any new storm systems that produce significant snowfall, especially if accompanied by wind, will cause the danger to rise and backcountry travelers will again need to be on the lookout for new wind slabs, or recent deposits of wind drifted snow.

In addition, our main concern for this time of year continues to be wet slide activity. Wet slide danger increases with daytime heating and is exacerbated by the lack of an overnight freeze. In general, if the snow surface is supportable, conditions are generally stable. If you find yourself punching through, or if the snow feels sloppy and unconsolidated, it is time to stay off of and out from under steep slopes. Look for signs of instability such as loose sluffs or wet point releases. Follow the mantra of start early and end early, and use the weather data links under current conditions to check for overnight freezes.

Thanks to everyone who supported the program this season and for sending in your observations. Have a great spring, summer, and fall, and we'll see you back here next season!
