Blog: Quick and easy avalanche rescue practice

We all need to take the time to practice with our avalanche rescue equipment... It's easy to do, doesn't take much time, helps to make sure our equipment is functioning correctly, and could go along way towards saving lives in the backcountry.

Here's a short video we did of our practice in the Tony Grove Area yesterday, (12-10-2014)

Interesting option to use the probe after one narrows down the area before digging. I got a couple of old analog beacons so I can practice single and multi searches at any time.

It's good to practice with the probe, and in an actual rescue situation getting a probe strike before you dig can save tons of time. It really sucks to dig a big hole down next to a buried victim only to have to re-search your excavations with a beacon. The order of operation remains the same in all rescues, and it should in practice. Find the signal, preform a pin-point search(narrow it down), probe for buried pack (or victim), go back to beacon search (pin-point) if you don't quickly get a strike with your probe, when you do get a probe strike leave the probe in place, DIG strategically, following down the in-place probe...

Also, using all your gear in practice checks to make sure it is operational and allows you to practice putting it together in the field... For most of us, it's best to start the season off doing single searches. Hopefully, this will be the most likely scenario anyway, since we don't want to expose more than one person to an avalanche path at one time. It's a good idea though, to increase the difficulty of the scenarios as you practice by going deeper and perhaps adding a beacon or two to the mix.

Great refresher Toby and Page! Thanks. These topics are also worthwhile discussions while walking on the skin track.
