Special Announcements
This reminds me of the good-old-days when it actually used to snow in Utah. The snowstorm has hit northern Utah hard with 42 inches of snow reported at Powder Mountain 30" at Monte Cristo, 20" at Ben Lomond and Alta has a measly 11 inches so far. Yippee! We are not issuing regular avalanche advisories yet because we have very little information coming in and most of us are busy getting our new website up and running for the season. Also, the first snow of the season is usually quite well behaved because it's falling directly on bare ground and it bonds well. But when you get 3 1/2 feet of snow like at Powder Mountain, it's definitely enough to see some sluffing within the new snow and if it's quite windy, you may even see some wind slabs in upper elevation wind exposed terrain. So it's definitely not too early to start thinking about avalanches. We will not issue any danger ratings until we start gathering more information about the snowpack either from our observations or from volunteer observers. You can start filling out the observation form on our website or call in an observation to 1-800-662-4140. We will start our regular avalanche advisories by the next snowstorm.
