Forecast for the Abajos Area Mountains

Eric Trenbeath

Friday, April 12, 2019
The avalanche danger is MODERATE today with two very different avalanche problems. At the upper elevations, be on the lookout for recent deposits of wind drifted snow on the lee sides of ridge crests and terrain features. And as the day heats up, be alert to a rising danger for wet slide activity. Signs of instability include roller balls, pinwheels, and loose snow sluffs. Get off of, and out from under steep slopes if they start to become wet and sloppy.

Weather and Snow
Skies are clear, northerly winds are mostly light, and 10,000' temps are in the single digits. Clouds should rebuild over the mountains as the atmosphere destabilizes beneath the cold air. Light, northeasterly winds will shift back to the SW later today, and high temps will be in the low 30's. High pressure builds over the weekend with mostly sunny conditions through Monday.
6"-8" fell over most of the range on Wednesday, with up to 10" up high. Kevin Dressel and Dustin Randall were up in North Creek yesterday and reported winter like conditions with good snow. Read the report here. Things will change rapidly as the sun turns on today, so get up there and get it!
Snotel totals at Buckboard Flat (8924')
Snotel totals at Camp Jackson (8858')
Wind, temperature, and humidity on Abajo Peak (11,000')
