Comments
Route today was up West Porter, through and down through north-facing Main Porter. Was finding poor snowpack structure in Main Porter on Dec 6, and there was an avalanche in the Ice Box on faceted snow down near the ground on Dec 8. The October rain crust 10-15 cms above the ground varies in thickness, and in some places has now completely disintegrated. Where the crust is still in place the weakest snow is the faceted layer on top of the crust. The slab on top is right-side up, and goes from 4F down to 1F. ECTX on north aspects at 8800'. The slab on top of the faceted snow at the ground is strong and supportable, and in many places in Porter Fork over a meter in thickness.
Overall Low hazard as the slab is strong, and appears to be bridging the faceted snow down near the ground.
In a few other quick pits in thinner snowpack areas (60-90 cms) there are some 4F midpack layers that are beginning to facet. This is similar to what Mark and Andrew were finding on Kessler this past Sunday, where the thinner snowpack areas are beginning to facet. Not a concern yet, but something to keep in mind in thinner snowpack areas.
Overall Low hazard where I was traveling today. The persistent slab problem seems dormant, and the slab on top continues to gain strength.
Sorry, no photos or video.
