It was a beautiful sunny and warm day in the mountains. South aspects got wet. The north aspects have dense loose powder with faceting occurring on the surface but now surface hoar to be found. I dug in a protected NW low angle slope just below Hoyts Peak at about 10100ft. The snow depth was 120 cm. The rain crust is now buried deep in the snow pack and is now very hard (pencil/knife hard). It took some effort to cut the snow when I was performing my ECT test. I wasn't able to get an ECT failure however I was able to get an isolated column to fail CT 22 RP (Q2) on the old snow new snow interface about 33 cm below the surface. When looking at the crystals I observed near surface facets along side some buried surface hoar. The surface hoar was rounding and was not widespread...that is I had to look real hard to find other surface hoar crystals. I also observed shallow rocky areas faceting through the entire snow pack.
