Comments
Powder park 3 was in great shape this morning with plenty of fresh snow to ski. The weather was cloudy (OVC) and cold with strong (30-40 mph) winds from the west at the mid and upper elevations. There were obvious signs of wind transport on all aspects due the swirling nature of the winds in the mountains. Precipitation rates were about an inch an hour throughout the tour (S2-S3).
Our test pit on a west aspect showed several melt-freeze crusts. The most problematic was the second crust at 174-176 cm. The layer of snow beneath this crust had a crack initiate but no propagation (ECTN13). Our propagation saw test had similarly stubborn results - PST 75/100 (END).
Wind transport was the big takeaway for the day. The winds were strong above 8k, especially along exposed terrain. There will certainly be no shortage of wind slabs to deal with in the near term.
