Weather
Weather Comments
Largely overcast, warm (40s F at trailhead), blustery. Sustained S/SW winds 30-40mph with harder gusts this morning. Rain started at low elevations shortly before 0900. Quick morning lap so didn't stick around much later than that.
Snow Characteristics
Snow Characteristics Comments
Squishy and unsupportive snow surface, with ski pen of 15cm or so. 15-30cm down is a ski supportive crust, which provided bed surface for kicking off wet loose sluffing under foot while making turns. Those turns were soupy mash potatoes.
Red Flags
Red Flags Comments
Wind present, but no snow transport we could see. Hopefully the snow materializes, but I'm not holding my breath given the consistent downgrading of forecast amounts for the Ogden zone.
Comments
Spring time. Plenty of brown town out there on the solar aspects, especially down low.
Chilly Peak slabs have plenty of rock showing. While this is a normal an area of concern in Ogden for glide avalanches, cracks won't be as wide as they sometimes are, simply because the remaining snow is becoming pockety and disconnected.
