Wet Snow
Problem #1 Comments
Did not see any new wet activity today. The snow had already been shocked by previous days sun and warmth and perhaps a touch of wind and cloud cover today kept most things at bay? The concerning issue was the superficial refreeze (that was just a wolf in sheep's clothing). The last deep refreeze was overnight of the 8th into the morning of the 9th as noted by the Mid-Mtn weather station at 7450'. Still, I thought we were a touch late on our east facing descent from 9400' to 7600' and did not inititate any wet loose push-alanches.
Avalanche Problem #2
Problem
Persistent Weak Layer
Problem #2 Comments
Profile at 7800' on an easterly facing slope. See photo above with two chocolate dust stripes. The most recent dust layer (really a marker for previous weak surface snow) was buried early last week prior to the two storms and is buried 1-2' deep. Faceted grains and a thin mf crust have been noted adjacent to this upper layer. All three ECTs today had full propagation on this layering today on loose melt freeze grains. The storm snow (in the photo roughly 30cm settled) overlies a mostly isothermal snowpack at this elevation.
I would suspect this layering for wet slabs if we were to continue strong solar and poor overnight refreezes. Rockfall, loose wet from above, cornice fall (skiers/riders possibly) may all be potential triggers as weather allows.
This layering may also be suspect in the higher elevation polar terrain.
