Comments
I dug a partial depth pit due to my last couple of pits seeing no influence on lower 100cm. The pit was on a north facing slope at 9100ft. The total depth of the snow was around 220cm (7ft2in)deep with the top 60cm (24in) being new snow. Within that 60cm there was the top 4 to 6 inches that was very soft loose snow, the rest of the snow was a very dense heavy snow sitting atop of the crust of the last snow storm from a couple weeks prior. Where the snow went from one finger hardness to pencil. On both three CT & ECT the top soft 4 to 6in area was failing at the transition line to the denser snow at a CT & ECT in the low teens but did not propagate on the ECT across the column. The ECT also failed on the crust of the previous storm of an ECT of 18 but again did not propagate across the rest of the column. We also saw signs of instability will checking test slopes. As well as could see the snow pushing in sheets in front of your sled.
