Comments
Isolated several columns quickly around 9,300 - 9,400 ft, NW aspect, pretty much on the traditional Gobblers skin track but out of the shelter of trees. Found about 20 cm new snow sitting on a moderately stiff slab, maybe 4 fingers. There was very little graupel, maybe a cm or 2 mixed with the new snow which seemed pretty well bonded to the old snow surface. The columns failed about 60cm below the old snow surface with relatively easy prying, leaving a clean shear. The PWL appeared to be alive and well. We observed 2 small collapses. but no avalanche activity. A gentle reminder to all: stopping and gathering a group of skiers halfway down and in the center of a very large avalanche-prone slope, as we saw today, exposes the whole group to unnecessary risk and is not a good habit to adopt.
Thick clouds and snow rolled in about 2pm and visibility was limited by an estimated 5cm/hr snowfall rate with strong wind. Might make things exciting if it keeps up for long.
