Comments
I toured along the base of the N face of Mellenthin. The new snow in the trees was soft and above treeline slopes were stripped and the snowpack was hard. Windbown drifts have collected on NE aspects and in gullies on N facing terrain. I dug a snowpit at 11300' on a NE aspect right at treeling and got ECTP23 at 20cm on a layer of facts that is loaded with a 30cm 4F slab, a 5cm section of faceted snow and 15cm of condensed, 1F snow from the most recent snow. The snow on NE aspects below tree line was soft and made for excellent skiing. I noted two small, old avalanches on steep NE & E facing terrain in no, to sparsely treed slopes. They either ran during this last storm and have been covered by wind blown snow or during an earlier storm cycle. Both were large enough to knock a skier/rider off their feet and both were located above terrain traps with trees below. Protected NE slopes in the trees and in meadows below tree line had the best and deepest snow. W-NW facing aspects below tree line were slightly wind affected but still soft.
