Comments
I started a solo tour from the Geyser Basin Trailhead at 1030 hours. It was sunny, calm and 38 degrees. I skinned up the shortcut and over to the weather station plot at the base of the North Woods. I skinned into Gold Basin and the base of Tele Heaven. There was no skin track after the weather station, breaking trail the rest of the tour. I skinned up the normal approach to the base of Tele Heaven and observed a natural avalanche that occurred the day before or last night (?). It appeared the trigger zone was up high in Gravel Pit Lanes. The debris came down into the top of Tele Heaven. At this same observation point, I felt a collapse while standing on a small knoll. There was no whumphing, I just felt the collapse, but no propagation was observed. I continued skinning up into the Upper Cirque without incident or any collapsing. There was about 8 inches most of the day of new and wind drifted snow. I continued skinning up Goldminers to the Pre-Laurel weather station. It was great skinning (if you can call it that going UP Goldminers!) with compact snow and grass showing. I felt completely safe on the skin up with the south aspect and low amount of snow. The predicted high winds coming with the small impending storm to the north started at about 1400 hours near the top of Goldminers. It was blowing at probably 25-30 mph and a couple of times the gusts nearly knocked me over. I did a quick transition in the strong wind at the weather station and skied down Laurel Highway. Normally, I would ski down North Woods, but knowing from 2 days ago how thin it was at the bottom, I decided to ski the Highway, which was quite pleasant. The only other thing of note is that near the top of Pre-Laurel Peak it is unusually bare and rocky. There is a small strip of snow about 100 yards long and 5 feet wide that is right near the cornice into Horse Creek, it was slightly nerve wracking with the west wind pushing me towards the edge.
