I began in Moab at about 1000 hours. There was heavy snow starting at about 8000 feet on the drive up. The Loop Road was very slippery with new snow on the new asphalt. Geyser Pass Road was not as bad due to the gravel base. I began a solo tour up Laurel Highway at 1100 hours and was surprised to find 3-4 inches in the parking lot and all old tracks leaving the parking lot were covered. It was cold at about 22 degrees at the car. I broke trail the entire way up Laurel Highway. There was no sign of any previous skin track above the Short Cut. The snow falling was relatively light and dry. It seemed to bond well with the old layer. There was no cracking, whoophing, or any displacement of the snow on the entire skin up to the rescue sled. Luckily the wind began to die down as I emerged from the trees. There were no signs of any other tracks down into the North Woods. The skiing was excellent for the top 300 feet or so. The new and drifted snow seemed to be about a foot deep and only occasionally did I feel a crusty bottom layer. The excellent conditions for turns quickly dissipated as I lost elevation. About half way down, there is just not enough base. There downed trees and branches everywhere. I found one, and was quickly ejected from my bindings. The normal skiers left traverse is tricky as you have to tread the needle between all the obstacles. It was a buzz kill unfortunately after the excellent (but still thin) skiing on the top half. Overall, it was good to get out in the storm and remember is still snows here every once in a while, but, at least in the North Woods we need more base to make it worth the skin in (and avoid the breaking leg hazard). In retrospect, It might have been a better run to ski down the Laurel Highway and through Laurel Meadows as there were fewer obstacles than in the North Woods.
