HS was generally about 2-3 meters above 8500’. We dug on an E aspect and saw a melt-freeze crust about 90cm (3’) down from the surface below a hard slab. We got an ECTP30 failing directly above this crust on 3mm facets. Rolling around to a more northerly aspect at the same elevation, a thin layer of facets at the same depth yielded no results.
This looked to be a more LCC>Provo transitional snowpack than what I saw last week on the north side of Timpanogos. It is worth noting that whereas most areas sit at near 120% of median for SWE, the north side of Timp (via Timp snotel and field obs) are a different story, at 88% of median. In other words, a different story on the north and south sides of American Fork canyon.
The major concerns will be wet and dry loose snow avalanches with lingering PWL issues in the background. An eye toward sun and warming will be key for the wet avalanche potential in the coming days. ...
photos of sluffing in teh new snow in very steep terrain and a couple of natural shallow soft slabs also in very steep terrain from Thursday.
