Interesting to compare the snow profile in this location with an avalanche that ran about 15 mins after I finished with this pit in the same drainage.
Temps were certainly warming up and trees were shedding snow and dripping alot of water onto the snow. However, the snow surface was supportive and provided great corn-like conditions and skinning was easy.
Although the start zone for the size 2.5 avalanche was nearly 1,500' higher, it was facing due south and getting some green house affect in the morning. This snow profile location was more SW and shaded by trees.
Hs at this location was 130cm. Only the top couple of cms were moist. Much of the mid pack looked to be very dense and well bonded, the only exception was a small layer of softer snow about what I am guessing is the Jan 4 or 5th interface.
The FC/DH at the bottom were very strong and basically pressed into a strong cohesive base. I did not do any column tests because I didn't think anything would budge, and didn't want to dilly-dally too long as things were heating up.
