Wind Drifted Snow
Problem #1 Comments
There were numerous areas of wind-drifted snow on leeward facing north-east slopes. We spent some time traversing above this steep (41 degree) north facing test slope at 7800' before we got it to avalanche with propagation. This slide was 30' wide and ran for 25'. It averaged 6" deep and was 12" at the deepest running on a density change within the wind-drifted snow. We decided to stay off of steep terrain because of the active wind loading and did not travel above 7800'. There were some areas that were enticing to want to ski, but we stayed out from under these slopes as the new snow/storm/wind was not to be trusted today. There is a lot of snow available for transport and I would not ski cut any hard wind-drifted slab in a place with any consequence as the chances of these slopes breaking above you will increase as the density of wind slab gets firmer. I will be assessing these areas of wind-drifted snow over the next few days.

Problem #2 Comments
Some new snow dry-loose avalanches noted on steep north-east facing slopes below 8000'. We had limited visibility into the higher elevation terrain and did talk to another group that reported seeing dry-loose point releases on Willard Peak.

Comments
Extended Column test showed no propagation at the new/old snow interface. I did not use a loupe to identify the weak layer in this location as I was more looking to see if there was propagation. There were two very indistinct storm weaknesses in the top foot of the snowpack that had broken (Q3, RP) shears with a shovel pry on a 30x30 column but they were not currently an issue and I would imagine they settle out in the next few days. This snowpit was in an area with no previous wind loading and there was approximately 25" of settled snow in this location.
