In White Pine Fork again today. It was cloudy and windy all afternoon. Snow started around 1.15pm, but really picked up at about 2.15pm. Winds were moderate to strong, and couldn't decide where they wanted to come from. At about 11a we were watching the wind gust strong from the southwest, making the cornices grow. At about 2pm we watched the wind move snow up the gully, pretty much straight from the west. Snow was easily moving in the brisk wind. Dug a pit at 8,760' NE facing at about noon, and it was pretty darned stable. 190 cm total depth, about 20 cm moderate density fresh on top, mostly consistently firm all the way down from there. I was feeling pretty comfortable with Low rating for today and for Monday.
Then the snow and wind really picked up. On our exit at 4pm, places we had lapped already three times were now cracking a bit as I broke trail. I did jump on a few very steep, short test slopes at 4pm, expecting to get them to break out easily. But they were not reactive at all. Despite that, I will be cautious Monday on wind-loaded. I would put tomorrow's rating at MODERATE to CONSIDERABLE.
Seems like the snow has tailed off. We saw three inches between 2pm and 4pm, and it was snowing hard as we left.
Turns were good and fun and predictable, until the last lap. Snow crystals did not look that sharp, and only about an inch and a half had fallen since our previous lap, but the exact same face that had been a hoot at 2.30pm was now terrible at 3.30pm. No glide. Same for both of us. Thought we were going to have to walk right down the fall line. Got better as we got lower. Odd stuff.
