Headed out for a short morning tour this morning. We didn't dig a full pit, but did keep an eye on surface conditions and dug several small hand pits. Most obvious thing to note was medium to large surface hoar crystals on pretty much all open slopes on the N side of the compass. Snow in the trees tended to not have any surface hour, and also seemed to be generally more dense and supportable, was also able to pack snow into semi loose balls with some effort. Snow in the open areas typically harbored some level of surface hoar, especially in places with advanced surface hoar the snow was considerably less supportable, and was notably more difficult to make snowballs with. Snow crystals were relatively small, so it was difficult to notice too much about the differences in the crystals between the open and treed slopes.
