Problem #1 Comments
Moving from the summit to the lower, southern drop, second skier in party of two remotely and unintentionally released an SUV sized cornice. Second skier was in tracks of the first and of at least six skiers from the previous day. Luckily the fracture was at his feet of and skier landed on the mountain side. First skier observed the cornice fall.
The cornice likely grew in size and weight from the wind and available snow for transport to a more dangerous level than yesterday.
The cornice maintained relative integrity until it reached the lower spine wall and lower angle, then it broke apart.
The snow did not react to the large cornice smashing into it and no secondary snowpack collapsing was observed. The cornice pushed snow from bigger rocks that were previously unseen in the drop.
First picture taken from the bottom for reference from Central Alta before the run. The second shows the main breakup location at the spine wall. The third is the lower apron, dark portions are the bulk of the cornice.
From the bottom, the debris field could be mistaken from a large wet slab, which was not observed at higher elevations during our time and we completed our run at approx 5:00pm.
