Various aspects south of the standard Electric Lake corner. On the south facing aspens beyond the corner, rapid warming with the slight sun and warmth this morning. Amazing number or crust layers in a south facing spot at 8,865'. Total depth of 92 cm, with distinct crusts at 42, 50, 60 and 80 cm, with poor bonding between the 80 cm crust and the top layer. Strong south wind as we were exiting at 4:30 P.M. ripped away all this top layer near the ridgeline.
On a northeast facing slope a bit farther to the south at 8,750', total depth of 115 cm, the bottom 0-43 cm was damp large facets, 43-50 cm 4F, a 1 cm crust at 50 cm, 50-73 1 finger, 73-90 4 finger, 90-115 fist. Playing with an extended column, the top 65 cm slid easily on the crust buried at 50 cm.
Easy boot penetration to the ground and frequent pole penetration to the ground made for tipsy, challenging transitions.
We experienced the loudest, most forceful whoomph we have ever felt while standing on a NE facing roadway at about 9,400', along the edge of a road cut. I break trail a lot on Skyline and am used to frequent whoomphing, including large, relatively flat areas settling. This was unnerving. The forecast for heavy snow Monday night/Tuesday makes this whoomph a big red flag for me.
