Comments
Took a trip into Days Fork to check out the Draw and Crystal Palace area. With BCC getting less snow than LCC we were hoping that the new snow wouldn't have tipped the scales for stability. Down in the lower portion of the drainage there was about 5-7 inches of extra low density snow. Up higher there was about 10-12 inches that was ever so slightly wind slabbed.
About 400ft from the top of CSR we started to encounter some soft wind slabs and experienced collapsing and cracking. On the more easterly facing slopes there was a faceted layer directly above a crust that seemed to be the culprit for the cracking. While isolating a small column of new snow it would easily propagate on this layer. After spending 15 minutes poking around the top of the Draw and trying to convince ourselves that we could find a safe way to ski it, we decided to bail on our original plan.
After giving up on the Draw we checked out a few other lower angle slopes in the north facing trees off the Banana Days Ridge. The snow on the mid elevation due north facing slopes has some of the worst facets I've ever seen. Breaking trail felt like sinking in quick sand. Even in non-wind effected snow we were getting large cracks in the soft snow.
With more snow in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow, the stability of mid Days Fork is only going to get worse.
