New snow was upside down with a denser layer near the top. The skiing and skinning were fine but you could feel it.

On small rollovers with just touch of wind drifting, I could get the denser snow to crack and slide downhill a short distance. It seems like instabilities in the new snow needed substantial wind loading. Looking at other observations, it seems the new snow was more reactive early in the day during more intense snowfall and/or wind loading.

Dug in two places for the weak layer from New Year's in Dry Fork where two avalanches were triggered on this layer on January 4th. In both locations, the weak layer was buried over 4 feet deep and was 1 finger hardness. It would not break in extended column tests. In fact, it would hardly break when I pried on the back of the column with my shovel.
Where will it be a problem? I'm not sure but I suspect we will not see any more avalanches on this layer. Places where it could be an issue are areas that generally receive less snow. In these areas this layer isn't buried as deeply. This layer (without the crust) is what caused a fatal avalanche in Farmington Canyon on Saturday, Jan 18th. This layer (with the crust) caused a large avalanche in Mill B South in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
Despite these two avalanches, none others were triggered on this layer despite people skiing and riding nearly every slope (or so it seemed) this weekend.

This afternoon the new snow seemed bonded and the danger was LOW where I traveled. Gusty winds were the main issue that will keep the danger at Moderate at upper elevations.
