Snow Characteristics Comments
A morning of shaking off the dust and getting a good look at the left over snow coverage in Upper Little Cottonwood Canyon. Got a couple good turns in with previous UAC Director Bruce Tremper while looking at the snowpack.
Above 8,000 feet we found a fairly consistent faceted snow pack with very little structure, the only outlier was a small deterioating suncrust about 6-8 inches down which was found as we moved towards the East side of the compass. Across the board Northerly and Easterly shaded terrain is holding between 10-18 inches of snow depending on elevation and terrain. West through Southeast aspects have a suncrust in protected terrain, or have simply melted down to dirt and rocks. The snow at upper elevations ridgelines has seen some consistent wind, which has caused it to blow down to dirt of firm drifts in protected areas.
The sun and windcrusts should continue to deterioate to facets and continue to form a consistent weak layer for future systems. Keep track of coverage.
Photos of general coverage, NE snowpit and Bruce enjoying some turns.
