Problem #1 Comments
Rain/Snow line varied between 7500ft and as high as 8200ft @ 3pm. On the way down the rain had intensified leaving the low elevation snow extremely wet and heavy. The snow between 8500ft-9200ft was falling relatively light with low wind and rates ~1 inch per hour. This snow was extremely wet & heavy but initially seemed to bond well with the surface snow. Upper elevations could be receiving much greater snowfall and my concerns would be focused on rain affected slopes below 8000ft and heavy snowfall above 9500ft.
Comments
Headed up toward UFO bowl via Aspen Grove around 1pm on 4/2. Decided to turn around at 9000ft on the ridge due to worsening visibility and intensifying snowfall. Put a pit in @ 8500 ft that showed good overall stability, however, there is a minor weak layer @ 70cm and a more significant layer under the most recent storm @ 20cm. This layer failed ECT21 without propagation. Slope was 38* and 10* North with air temp @ 38 degrees. By the time we returned to Aspen Grove it was raining hard and the snow had become extremely saturated.
