Today was an adventurous day to be up in the La Sals. As we skinned up toward Gold Basin, we observed the wind direction changing a number of times back and forth between southerly and northerly. We also watched as the intensity of snowfall increased from less than 1cm/hr to at least 2cm/hr with the precipitation particles taking on irregular forms. At first, this new snow also appeared to be light in density, yet the more time we spent in the snow the more our clothes became saturated. This became even more evident when we took a few turns in the trees above and struggled to stay on top. When we headed back down to the car, our approach tracks had already filled back in and the car had gathered at least 3" in the past 3 hours. The snowfall showed no signs of slowing down and made for dangerous and deep conditions on the road. As the snow continues to fall and get blown around, we expect to see our avalanche danger become high in the days ahead.
