Problem #1 Comments
We observed several avalanches that appear to have occurred during the Jan 20-21 storm or afterwards due to wind loading. These include Exxon's Folly, Gravel Pit Lanes, and steep treed terrain to the looker's left of Noriega's Face. These are storm slabs and wind slabs failing on the buried persistent weak layers deeper in the snowpack.
We did not experience any collapsing or cracking. The snowpack has settled somewhat but once a large enough trigger occurs in steep terrain the force will step down to buried weak layers and produce large avalanches as seen during the recovery operations last weekend.
Comments
Tour into Gold Basin. We cautiously struck out into Gold Basin in search of good skiing conditions. Gravel Pit Lanes, Exxon's Folly, and the steep treed terrain looker's left of Noriega's Face all avalanched during the Jan 20-21 storm or afterwards due to wind loading. We found that the shoulder above Tele Gold had also avalanched; probably in the same event as the main Gravel Pit lanes slide. The pictures below may not completely show the slides; this is partially because some of the debris is filled in with snow from the storm or later wind. Fresh crowns were visible up high. We chose to ski Tele Gold since the slopes above had already avalanched. Turning conditions were excellent. Terrain selection must be made very carefully right now. There are numerous steep, wind-loaded areas that are ready to slide including upper elevation slopes or even smaller steep and shady slopes along the tour route in Gold Basin. As Eric said recently the range is coming apart piece by piece.
