Snow Characteristics Comments
Yesterday’s and last nights new snow was mostly graupel mixed with stellars, medium in body. There seemed to be 6 to 8 inches of new that was fairly well bonded to the old surface. South facing got damp and will most likely be crusted in the morning.
Comments
Figured it was time for someone to go into Cardiac and look at the avalanche on the ridge, the place has been deserted since the storm and I wanted to see if the slide on the ridge was storm snow only or if it broke into faceted snow. There were multiple avalanches noted on the Ridge, some where between storms but the largest ones appeared to happen late Monday. I walked up the largest one that was right in the middle, it had solid chunks of debris up to the size of refrigerators strewn across the slope. Once I got up to the rocky chutes I could see a large 4ft crown right of the ridge line, it seems to have pulled out high on the ridge taking small trees with it an when it hit the main slope it created another crown, this one was closer to 6ft deep and on inspection it was clear that it broke into old snow and basically went to the dirt with about 5 inches of melt freeze crust at the bottom, basically taking out the whole years snow pack in the starting zone. The snow on the S facing across the street from alta was punchy and inverted but the Keyhole our N facing entry into Cardiac was supportable and not as punchy. I did not note any instabilities today even after dropping a couple large cornices onto the steep N facing and also one on the E facing test slope while walking up from Alta.
Photos: upper crown, lower crown with the ski pole sitting in the dirt, debris, and a couple videos for a better look.
