Today's weather was obscured with winds stripping snow off the trees at the mouth of most trailheads in BCC. Graupel and snow began around mid-morning with off and on pulses, wind was ripping. Just under 60cm of new snow.
Night and day difference from yesterday. I was going to submit an observation yesterday regarding how we experienced the high PI rates while skiing in the meadows, however the lack of wind in that area made things manageable - as long as you kept terrain choices in check. Yesterday I noticed a couple schmooey releases in the Football Fields from the overload period of high snow, but it was otherwise relatively quiet (on one NE roll I observed an older wind slab that was becoming buried, which had weak snow underneath - classic booby trap and this kept our guard high with slope angles and aspects).
Yesterday's lack of wind effect and loading in the Meadows was a distant memory today. The whole meadow chutes had wind effect today and on some of the mid slope rolls there were 70cm thick windslabs sitting above loose snow - not a good combo. We didn't see any activity. Though I suspect anywhere with more wind, and on different aspects with steeper shots you would get some serious action, and we didn't want to anything to do with it. Hard snow over weak is a recipe for an avalanche, and the change from yesterday's waist deep blower to thick cake didn't help things.
Lots of snow and wind makes me think things need to settle and adjust to the new load given the poor structure (which in some areas is midpack and to the ground in others).
Photo below is a cakey windswept skinner.
