Here's a brief summary of what I've seen in the Ogden Mountains over the past week or so. There's not a whole lot of natural snow in the Ogden mountains. Most of the snow from the early October has melted on all but the highest, Northerly facing slopes (I'd estimate above about 8500-9000 feet). On 11/11, I visited a steep, Northerly facing slope near the Snowbasin/Mt. Ogden ridgeline. In this area, the old October snow has turned into a hard crust that I needed my boot or shovel to break through. This crust was a maximum of 3-4" thick. There are some large facets underneath this crust in places. In other places, the crust seems to be sitting on the ground. A couple of inches of new snow fell on top of the crust (around Nov. 4th I believe) and has morphed into weak, loose near surface facets. On 11/11 there was a fresh dusting of new snow on top. The deepest snow I could find was about 6 inches deep. It was easy to avoid the October crust by switching aspects slightly. For example, on an adjacent East facing slope, the November snow was sitting on frozen bare ground, and was loose and faceted, and only a couple of inches deep. South and West slopes in the Ogden Mountains are bare ground. East slopes at lower and mid elevations are mostly bare. Higher elevation East slopes seem to have a thin layer of snow, but will likely melt off this week with the warmer temps. The temps the past few weeks are noticeably colder, and all shady and Northerly facing slopes are starting to retain snow and frost throughout the day, even at lower elevations and many canyon bottoms and drainages. The photos below are from 11/5 to 11/15.
Comments
Monday 11/5/2018: Minimal snowcover on West side of Mt. Ogden. Still frost at end of day on the upper, shady parts of the Malan's Peak trail.
11/11/2018:
Snowcover on Snowbasin side of Mt. Ogden
Snowcover and hand pit on shady northerly facing cirque.
Depth hoar and near surface facets above and below the October crust. Sorry there's no scale - I forgot my crystal card - first time out this year...
11/15/2018: Nordic Valley is bare except for manmade snow. The South face of James Peak is bare. No snow on the North Ogden Divide slide paths.
