Comments
Hiked (on foot) up Solitude to Twin Lakes Pass, and into Grizzly Gulch last evening. Snow was wet, and composed of large, corn type grains. Mostly mid shin to knee deep, varying by location.
A crust was observed at all elevations I traveled through, ranging from 2mm to 2cm. It was unsupportable on the way up, and had refroezn and was mostly supportive on my walk down.
This crust will likely bond well with the little bit of snow we're expecting through the weekend, but will provide a perfect bed surface for future avalanches to slide on. The warm crust, cold dry snow, and cold nights will promote rapid faceting on top of this crust, and will likely be reactive later on.
Coverage is the name of the game for those who are itching to get out the second it snows again. The existing snow crust will be ski supportive, but the new snow will hide rocks and other hazards. Go out before the storm, and map out where you would like to ski, before it gets buried. Bottom line is that snow is not on all aspects currently, and even where there is existing snow, coverage is still extremely thin. Patience is the name of the game.
