Snow Characteristics Comments

Melt- freeze-crust or damp at lower and mid elevations depending on time of day, same deal with E and W at all elevations but the high elevations were slow to soften and the high W was just starting to soften on our exit at 2:30pm, N either had wind crust or 4 inches of dense loose dry snow or a combination of both. The high clouds and the cooling breeze kept wet activity to a minimum in the alpine.

Comments

Basically stuck to the N end of the compass in the upper Maybird Cirque today, the snow was still dry and not extremely wind hammered on the due N facing and on the NW. skinning worked well in the dry snow until the angle of the slope got over 30 degrees then it was a slip and slide fest but luckily the snow was perfect for boot packing with about 4 inches of penetration into the old bed surface. Skiing the steep N facing lines did create some sluffing but it was minor and not much of a factor. I did get a good look at the slide on the NW face of Box Elder basically went wall to wall with a massive debris pile, sorry no photo, guess I was in too big of a hurry to ski. Exiting at mid elevation and below was a bit grabby but worth the hassle to finally get some time in the high alpine, great to run into Greg Gaggne out there looks like we were both looking for the elusive dry snow.

Photos: old melt freeze crust shinning in the sun, wet activity from yesterday on the W, and good snow for boot packing.
