Snow Characteristics Comments

You can pretty much find every kind of surface out there. Makes from some tricky skiing. Nice loose snow one minute to breakable crust the next. Best snow was found in protects W-NW trees. The soft snow was faceted and weak- "poor man's powder"

We found a 25cm deep old windslab. 1F-Pencil hard. With the past 2 days being calm and clear. I'd guess the majority of these leftover wind slabs are settled out but the outliers are important to note too.

Couple things stood out to me: For one our Snowpit Depth at 185cm. Much deeper than any other area I have dug this season. To me this is not representative of our current snowpack but good information for those areas heavily wind loaded areas with a deeper snow depth.

Our Snowpack right now is plenty weak but the reason we are not seeing avalanches is because we are lacking a cohesive slab off snow. We dug in a area where the snow surface was very firm (1-finger to Pencil hardness, an old windslab). I wanted to find a location with a slab and see what we might find.

To me this snow pit was a outlier of our general snowpack in Big and Little Cottonwood. Digging around the past couple days I've been seeing a much shallower snow depth averaging 50-75cm. So what does this snowpit mean? Well I don't exactly know. It's a outlier but it's the outlier that catch people off guard and can kill them. Low danger doesn't mean No danger.
