Weather Comments
Even with above freezing temperatures reported overnight and early morning at the Snotel weather site, the snow surfaces in the lower and mid elevations were firm and supportable on all aspects in the early morning. Temperatures warmed gradually throughout the day as early morning clouds gave way to full sun.

Snow Characteristics Comments

The approach to Cutler ridge now requires hiking from the parking area to where the summer trail first enters the oak woods and the first skinnable snow begins.

The supportable crust surface at lower elevations remained frozen until mid afternoon in the shaded aspects and softened slightly where kissed by the sun.

An inch or so of soft faceted grains adorned the mid-elevation crust on wind-protected NW through NE aspects.

After carefully negotiating the rock-studded slope for 100-200' just below the ridge line, the steep NE face of Ben Lomond sported a delightful mosaic of dense/faceted loose snow and hard wind crust.

Often as elusive as perfect powder, excellent corn skiing conditions developed by early afternoon on the SE facing flanks of Willard peak below the big cliffs.

Collapsing
Rapid Warming
Poor Snowpack Structure
Red Flags Comments
Although no collapsing or cracking was observed, this remains a possibility on the steep NE bowl especially just below the upper ridge line where a hand pit showed very loose faceted grains and voids below a surface wind crust.

Problem #1 Comments

Rapid warming on sunlit slopes may produce wet slides and falling rocks (a dinner plate-sized rock pinwheeled uncomfortably close and rudely reminded us that there are indeed many hazards in the mountains)!!!

NE face of Ben Lomond

Deep in the Ogden area mountains, the False-Spring reveals an unknown peak awaiting its first descent.
