Red Flags Comments
Areas that have a thinner snowpack are still holding poor structure with quite weak basal facets. With some areas holding a decent overall snowdepth of around 4 feet, this makes the avalanche danger vary greatly from location to location. THIN AREAS HAVE MORE DANGER especially on the east facing slopes which have been recently wind loaded.

I was hopeful that I would not find any avalanches that broke into old snow this weekend but unfortunately that's not the case. I looked at a lot of natural avalanches that occurred during the storm with only some minor areas breaking into old snow. This made me hopeful that we would not see any issues with a persistent weak layer.

However, today I found a number of snowmobiler triggered avalanches that were triggered on Saturday which broke into old weak snow:

We need to continue to give areas with a thin snowpack a lot of respect. This is getting tricky because it is hard to know by just looking at a slope if it is shallow. The only sure way is to have been following the progression of a slope through the winter so you KNOW how deep the snowpack is in that location.
