The American Avalanche Institute's Avalanche Level 1 course offers a comprehensive introduction to avalanche awareness and safe backcountry travel and is recognized by the American Avalanche Association. Designed for those with minimal to no prior avalanche education, this hybrid format combines self-paced online modules, a live Zoom session with the Course Leader, and two full days of hands-on field training. You'll learn to assess snowpack, terrain, and weather to make informed backcountry decisions. Upon successful completion, students will receive a nationally-recognized certificate of completion. Course Format:
  • Online Learning: Begin with approximately 7 hours of self-paced online modules covering foundational avalanche knowledge, snowpack dynamics, and terrain assessment.

  • Live Session: Engage in a 1-hour Zoom session with the Course Leader in preparation for the field sessions.

  • Field Training: Apply your knowledge during two full days in the field, on snow, practicing snowpack evaluation, terrain and weather assessment, and companion rescue techniques in real-world conditions.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret and apply avalanche forecasts to make informed decisions.

  • Identify and evaluate avalanche terrain.

  • Utilize the AIARE Decision Making Framework for terrain choices.

  • Perform effective companion rescue techniques.

  • Communicate effectively within a group setting.
