AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course Learn the skills you need to travel safely in avalanche terrain. This three-day course is the first step in the AIARE education track and is designed for anyone who ventures into the winter backcountry—whether on skis or a splitboard.
Led by AIARE-certified instructors with AMGA training, you’ll gain the knowledge and hands-on experience to make informed decisions, plan safe tours, and execute companion rescues.
What You’ll Learn:
- Understanding avalanches and identifying avalanche terrain
- Planning and decision-making strategies for backcountry travel
- Snowpack and terrain assessment techniques
- Effective use of avalanche safety gear (beacon, shovel, probe)
- Companion rescue skills
Course Format:
- Pre-Course: Online AIARE learning modules
- Night 1: Zoom-based classroom session
- Day 1 (Field): Field book use, safety gear practice, snowpack & terrain basics
- Day 2 (Field): Group tour applying course skills in real-world conditions
Included: Student manual, AIARE field book, and use of beacon, shovel, probe, and pack if needed. Demo skis and splitboards available by request.Transportation up canyon included!
Recommended: Participants should be comfortable using their backcountry setup prior to the course.
