Avalanche Problem #1
Problem
New Snow
Problem #1 Comments
Saw lots of cracking throughout the whole area. Soft slabs of new snow were peeling off on all aspects, anywhere from 4-8" deep.
Avalanche Problem #2
Problem
Wind Drifted Snow
Problem #2 Comments
Some smaller wind slabs on west facing slopes to the skier left of the "heavens halfpipe" bowl, cracking/breaking about 2-4" deep. Additionally, the entire area had heavy wind activity, creating various depths of soft slabs from new snow & wind.
Comments
Our first lap up and down was perfect. Relatively clear skies made it possible to see some old wet slide debris, as well as a handful of small slides from the new snow on either side of the bowl. Our second lap is where we ran into trouble. During our transition clouds moved in quickly severely limiting visibility, forcing us to move very slowly down the bowl, we ended up on some steeper portions of the slope, which is where we saw most of the soft slab cracking/failing. Ultimately we had to follow (and ruin) the skin track down as it was the only thing we could see besides our skis on our feet.
