Comments
A few big picture obs for the Ogden zone in general.
1. Noted a dozen or so D1 wet loose avalanches on the town side of Mount Ogden, running up to a few hundred feet, starting at elevations from about 7500-9000ft on S and SW aspects.
2. Similarly noted a couple D1/D2 wet avalanches on the Ben Lomond massif. One ran in the SW facing terrain along the Skyline Ridge between Chilly Peak and the saddle, estimating a few hundred feet starting around 8500ft. Another ran in a gully on S/SE terrain starting near the SW ridge of Ben Lomond's S face, starting ca. 8000ft.
3. Low elevation snow is disappearing rapidly on S and W aspects, with the rocky west sides of Lewis Peak, Ben Lomond, and Willard looking much more brown than even yesterday. Snow on low elevation northerly terrain was pretty much completely unsupportive down to the ground except on packed trails.
4. Wind effects are still visible in the terrain, with the west side of Mount Ogden holding it's typical scoured/sun baked brown patch at the head of Beus Canyon. Looking to Thurston Peak on the south side of I-80/Weber Canyon, there's plenty of scour on windward mid/upper elevation slopes near the ridgeline, as well as wind lips and cornices visible for quite some distance on N/NE sub-ridges.
5. Felt a surprising amount of warm wind on my low elevation walkabout this morning. Also noted a sizeable rooster tail (easily visible from 10-15 miles away) of snow blowing off the summit of Willard Peak in the W/SW winds.
