Comments
On Feb 22nd 2025 we decided to venture into the oquuirhs to ski Bald Mountain. The approach starts from Ophir and heads up a road until you reach the base of the mountain. At that point we headed to the area that we were considering skiing. On the way to the ridge we experienced two sizeable collapses. Upon reaching the ridge we decided to dig a pit on the aspect (NE) we were looking at. The total snowpack measured 80 cm with a clear delineation between the faceted base and the new consolidated snow on top at around 35 cm. This was a very poorly structured snowpack. We performed a ECT test and recieved an average result of 12 after performing two tests. The snowpack collapsed on the weak layer at 35 cm and propagated down the entire column. After removing the top part of the snowpack by sliding it off, it revealed a very planar and uniform surface. This confirms the PWL in the Oquuirhs and definitely seems worse than the PWL we have in the wasatch just due to lack of snowpack.
