I've been gone a coupla weeks so returning to the lingering low-angle powder party was totally fine with me, and it's nice to see the 'pack get pumped up a bit. Good snow yesterday that was fast enough for fun on lower angle, and expected more today, and we got it.....til we didn't! Around 1:30 we skied another nice run until about 8500, when it seemed to turn to goo within minutes and a couple-hundred vertical feet. It was nice powder and then....there were rollerballs all around, and being in a gully my alarm bells suddenly started ringing for little slides into the terrain trap. Though I've been gone, it sounds like the snowpack has continued to take a beating since I left, and it was bruised prior to that, and with the surprisingly-abrupt greenhousing it seemed like the latest punch (and the skiing went from fun to terrible) and we didn't think we'd even have time for one more climb to milk another, so we bailed. When we hit the MCC road - usually a bit of a cold sink - it was 42 degrees.
Looks like a mild night is forecasted with warm temps and sun Monday...so it could be mushy again, but at least we may get a real shot at big wet slides, maybe on more aspects than just south? Depending on elevation, I suppose.
Where's my nice February snowpack?!!
Comments
It seems like with a few exceptions folks have been pretty respectful of the snowpack; lots of well-fattened steep lines are looming unscathed, despite their appeal and the scarcity of the resource.
