Problem #1 Comments
Observed wind swept snow surfaces on all aspects in the upper Mill D South Fork. Wind crusts ranged from 1-3 inches thick. Crusts were breakable when skiing causing the ski to punch through. Underneath most wind crusts were large grain size facets which became larger as we rose in elevation.
Comments
Went out today into upper Cardiff Fork. All South facing aspects on the way in from LCC developed a slick sun crust over the past week of clear skies. On Northerly facing slopes, we observed wind crusts over many inches of sugar facets. The facets became weaker and larger grain size near the summit of Mount Superior and I expect this to be the case on most upper elevations. While the skiing today was generally safe from avalanches, the new heavy and dense snow expected this weekend will put a large load on the weak snow pack. In regions that see higher snow totals from this storm, I expect widespread natural avalanches to occur on the weak and faceted snow pack. This may become a PWL over the next few storm cycles.
