The snow surface in even in avalanche starting zones was covered by surface hoar crystals. Any soft or new snow capping wind or sun crusts is already sugary or faceted.

There are several crusts of varying thickness in the top foot of snow in south-facing terrain. Sandwiched between the crusts is very weak faceted snow formed by extreme temperature gradients caused by the very cold temperatures and clear nights...
We could see evidence of a few recent loose sluffs in steep terrain
