Comments
Sorry, no photos, and this report will only consist of a list of observations we made today:
1. Warm(er) temperatures late this past week helped heal the old snow surface underneath the few cms of new snow. Although this coming week looks prime for developing facets at the surface (clear and cold), this is overall good news as it seems we currently do not have a weak layer near the surface.
2. I had found a layer of facets on top of a crust on a SW aspect buried down 15-20 cms, with ECTP15-20. I don't think this is a widespread issue, but I'll continue to look for facets around crusts on solar aspects.
3. I am still getting full propagation in wind-loaded areas where a buried layer of near-surface facets was preserved underneath wind slabs that formed from the strong winds Tue/Wed (Jan 21/22), but these wind slabs are relaxing and I suspect this problem will only persist for a few more days at most.
Where we traveled today the danger was Low outside of wind-affected terrain, with areas of Moderate on slopes that were recently wind-loaded.
This Week: the small amounts of new snow will likely facet this week, and in thinner snowpack areas (mostly outside of the upper Cottonwoods) the entire snowpack will likely continue to weaken. With some signals of storms returning by this coming weekend, I'll be paying attention to the existing snow surface as it may be a weak layer with any new loading events (wind and/or new snow).
