Had one nice big whoomph while riding across a mellow ridge.
We made it out for a short little romp in the mountains of Northern Utah today and we're expecting some heavy dumping while we were there. We didn't see much more than a few flakes and some nice rime up high on the front range. The rime coated the nice snow with a thin layer of ice that was still rideable but kind of just sucked. The worst part was the thick pea soup that we were trying to negotiate through to ride. At times the whiteout was so bad we couldn't tell sky from snow. We changed plans and dropped to a lower elevation where there was no rime and better visibility.
I dug a quick pit at around 7500 feet on a northeast facing aspect that was 23 degrees in steepness There was about 32" of snow on the ground that was very punchy. My compression test resulted in total column failure at the ground on 23 and 24 taps. The snow was completely faceted and ugly. I performed an extended colum test that surprisingly didn't produce any failures. I'm sure we just need a little bit more loading for things to get exciting out there.
