Comments
Took a trip out the PC Ridgeline to South Monitor Bowl today. There's a much thinner snowpack on the PC Ridgeline than in upper LCC where i've been spending most of my time. S Monitor had about 12 to 16 inches of snow at best, with a supportable crust underlying the new snow on the E-NE part of the bowl and i was surprised to see that the crust was not just in the starting zone but on the entire slope all the way to the bottom. Under the crust is 5 to 6 inches of well developed facets. This setup is troubling in 2 ways, first the crust is a super slippery bed surface that has covered any anchors available, secondly the crust will hold a bigger load of snow but thin spots around bushes and rocks becomes a good place to trigger a larger slide that breaks below the crust and takes the whole bowl with it. There was localized cracking on the lee side of the ridgeline but there's just not enough of a load to get things rolling yet.
