Today I went to Cardiff to take a look at the snow before the upcoming storm. I was interested in the high N facing terrain. Took a look at the backside of Cardiff Peak with a quick snow pit, this is a due N facing slope, that never sees the light of the sun this time of year, the pit was at a elevation of around 10,000 ft. The top layer consists of medium density, wind compacted snow, the mid-pack is a 2 finger wind slab at the base of the pack there’s 4 inches of well developed, loose facets. Not a good set up for a incoming load. Most of the NE facing terrain in upper Cardiac has been hammered by wind in the last few days and left some slopes scoured to the dirt and others with wind sculptured windslabs. Also of note is the NW and W facing snow in higher terrain that is thin and has weakened all the way to the dirt and will not hold up to even a small load.
