Went looking for a weak layer that had produced avalanches on Feb 24 in this area.
Looked on (photos in respective order below)
- East facing at 8600 ft
- Southwest facing at 8800 ft
- Northwest facing at 8800 ft
I could see where that layer would have been but did not find any faceted snow. Only a slightly softer layer about 2-3 ft deep. There were a few facets near a very rough and thick series of ice crusts on the SW facing slope but of now concern because the snow is well bonded to those crusts. Extended column tests would barely break and did not propagate. Even burping the newest snow on my shovel showed general good bonding between all the storm layers.
HOWEVER, it's worth remembering an analogy that Drew mentioned this morning in our staff meeting - "it's as if there is glue between all the storm layers, and it needs time to dry. The problem is that we start adding snow and wind blown snow on top (adding stress) before the glue has had time to dry"
Overall, I found the snow to be right side up. In the photos, I drew a line in the snow where there may have been a slightly softer layer that may have created avalanches on Feb 24. With a good blanket of snow and water on top of it now, it seems as though the glue has dried. Now the glue in more recent storm layers needs time to dry.
